The West Texas Collection was nominated for its “Vietnam: Through the Lens” exhibit and its outstanding contributions to preserving the records of Vietnam veterans and educating the public of their contributions and sacrifices, thereby enriching our state’s understanding of history.

Chubb said, “The individuals who supported your nomination wrote of the transformative effect of this work on Angelo State University’s campus and the larger community. All wrote of how deserving the West Texas Collection is of the Archival Award of Excellence. The Texas Historical Records Advisory Board strongly agrees.”

The “Vietnam: Through the Lens” exhibit opened in November 2014 and ran for nearly a year until closing in August 2015. It included hundreds of photos, letters, other documents and artifacts contributed by local and area Vietnam veterans. All the contributed items, as well as numerous video interviews with Vietnam veterans, have been digitally archived in the West Texas Collection.

Suzanne Campbell, WTC head of special collections and programs, said, “The WTC was thrilled to receive this award. It is especially rewarding since this is the first year the award was presented. None of this would have been possible without the nomination by Dr. Shirley Eoff of the ASU Honors Program and the students who digitized and interviewed. The true heroes of the project are the Vietnam veterans who trusted us with their stories and their photographs and allowed us the opportunity to tell the real story of Vietnam.”

The Archival Award of Excellence was established to annually honor a Texas institution for its projects and/or ongoing programs that build collections, enhance access to archives, develop effective digitization programs or implement preservation strategies.
