ASU Again Named a ‘Military Friendly School’

November 10, 2016

For the eighth consecutive year, Angelo State University has been designated a “Military Friendly School” by Victory Media, which comprises several magazines and websites, including G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse, that serve military personnel transitioning into civilian life.

The 2017 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top U.S. institutions of higher education that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success both in the classroom and after graduation. Each year, the list of Military Friendly Schools is provided to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.

Dr. Brian J. MayDr. Brian J. May“We are very proud of our ongoing recognition as a Military Friendly School,” said ASU President Brian J. May. “We continually work to improve the campus experience for our military and veteran students through our VETS Center and Center for Security Studies, as well as other offices like admissions, financial aid and student services. It’s nice to see our efforts recognized on a national scale, and it’s even more gratifying to know that we are doing a good job serving our military students and their families.”

The institutions on the 2017 list were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 8,800 U.S. schools were eligible, but only 1,160 were awarded the “Military Friendly” designation for 2017. Final ratings were determined by combining each institution’s survey scores with an assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence and loan default rates for all students – and specifically for student veterans.

Daniel Nichols, chief product officer for Victory Media, said, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans. Military Friendly helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”

The complete list of Military Friendly Schools is available online at MilitaryFriendly.com with links to school profiles. The list will also be published in Victory Media’s 2017 Guide to Military Friendly Schools, as well as in special education issues of G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse magazines.

Victory Media is a veteran-owned business with various related publications, including G.I. Jobs, Military Spouse and STEM Jobs magazines. The group annually rates the nation’s “Military Friendly Employers,” “Military Spouse Friendly Employers,” “STEM Friendly Schools” and “Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.”
