College Grade Point Average (GPA)

December 06, 2016

In order to graduate, students must maintain an acceptable Grade Point Average, or GPA. GPAs are the average value of the accumulated final grades earned in courses over time. Sometimes it can be tricky to understand and calculate GPAs, but it is important for students to keep track of these in order to make sure they are on the right path towards graduation.

The importance of GPAs lies in the fact that these are used by many universities to determine academic honors. All universities have GPA requirements in order for students to graduate, as do a student’s specific college. Students must remember to consult graduation requirements by department in the University Catalog or department web pages that show degree plans for the major.

At Angelo State University, Grade Point Averages are calculated on a 4.0 scale. At the end of each semester, the value of the student’s final letter grades in their classes are multiplied by three (for each class worth 3 credit hours) or 1 (for each class worth 1 credit hour), and then divided by the total number of credit hours attempted by the student that semester. Final grade values are as follows:

A – 4.0

B – 3.0

C – 2.0

D – 1.0

F – 0.0

Students can look at their GPAs at the end of each semester on Ramport, under the “Student Services” tab. They can calculate their GPAs at any time using the GPA calculator here.
