Financial Planning Program Certified by CFP Board

February 07, 2017

Angelo State University’s Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance has maintained its status as a Registered Program with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board).

The CFP Board awards the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification to individuals who meet its education, examination, experience, ethics and other requirements. ASU’s Registered Program status ensures that students completing their ASU Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance with specialization in personal financial planning will meet the education requirement to take the CFP Certification Examination administered by the CFP Board.

Blaine Akin, chair of the CFP Board’s Board of Directors, said, “The CFP Board is pleased to have an educational institution of the caliber of Angelo State University offering a CFP Board Registered Program. As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that Angelo State’s program will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to attain the CFP certification, the standard of excellence for competent and ethical financial planning.”

Colleges and universities seeking CFP Board Registered Program status must submit an application for review by the CFP Board. Registration is granted on a biennial basis and must be renewed every other year. ASU has been a Board Registered Program since 2001 and will apply for registration renewal again in 2018 for 2019-20.

In addition to its CFP Board Registered Program status, the ASU Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance is also accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). ASU was also recently named one of the nation’s “75 Leading Schools for Financial Planners” by SourceMedia and its On Wall Street magazine.

The curriculum for Angelo State’s B.B.A. in finance with specialization in personal financial planning consists of 120 credit hours and can be completed on campus in four years. ASU also offers a B.B.A. in finance with specialization in corporate finance.
