ASU Intramural Team Wins Hoops Regional

Angelo State University’s intramural men’s basketball team “Dynasty” won the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s National Campus Championship Series (NIRSA-NCCS) regional basketball tournament March 11 at Oklahoma State University

In addition, an ASU women’s team, “Explicit,” finished second in the women’s division. 

Dynasty won seven games to sweep the men’s tournament, clinching the title with a 56-50 win over a Texas Southern University squad.  That followed a 60-58 victory over a University of Texas at San Antonio team in the semifinals.  

On its run through the tournament bracket, Dynasty also defeated teams from Central Missouri, 67-62, Missouri State, 60-34, University of Houston-Downtown, 43-35, Oklahoma State, 68-34, and Emporia State, 63-59. 

With its regional championship, Dynasty advances to the NIRSA-NCCS National Championships, which are set for April 13-15 at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Meanwhile, ASU’s Explicit finished 4-1 at the regional tournament, falling to a Henderson State team in the title game, 58-44.  The ASU squad reached the championship game with wins over teams from Sam Houston State University, 52-38, the University of Texas at Arlington, 42-39, Lamar University, 50-45 and Texas Southern, 33-32. 

Dynasty’s Roman Vaughn was named Men’s MVP after scoring 86 points in the tournament, and teammate Quinn Barfield was picked for the men’s all-tournament team after rolling up 106 points.   Explicit’s Mercedes Lopez scored 54 points to earn an all-tournament selection in the women’s division.
