It’s time for students to begin thinking about their housing plans for the Summer and Fall 2017 semesters! 

Changes to housing requirements now allow students to live off-campus after their first full year at ASU, regardless of how many credit hours they have obtained. For the majority of housing students, this means that they may now choose to live off campus after the conclusion of the spring semester. Students will not have to do anything or get any approvals to do this- they just simply choose to not renew. For students who entered housing for the first time this Spring, these will need to renew for next fall. Housing contracts have, however, been updated to make renewal contracts for one semester, rather than the academic year. This means that when students renew, next year, they may cancel their housing at the close of the fall semester if they wish to do so- free of penalty. This is something that only applies to renewal students and is not offered to incoming students, who still must live on campus for both the fall and spring terms.

For students who want to live on campus next fall, they will access the renewal application through MyHousing, beginning on March 21, 2017 at 7 am. After they have applied and paid their application fee of $100, they will be able to immediately select a room. If the students wants a specific roommate, all they need to do is select the same room as their desired roommate. While the process is technically first-come, first-served, please know that housing has allocated more rooms than the number of people they anticipate renewing: they will be allocating the majority of Texan Hall and Centennial Village, all of the Vanderventer Apartments, and substantial blocks of rooms in the Massies, Plaza Verde, and Concho Hall, as well as a few rooms in Carr Hall. The reason housing applications are opening at 7 am is to be fair to students who may be in class all day that day without a break - we want to give them an opportunity to select rooms early so that they don’t end up picking at the end of the day.

There will be much more information coming out in the next few weeks about renewals. There will even be programs to help students know what to look for in off-campus contracts for those planning to go off-campus. The bottom line is that Angelo State wants to support students whether they choose to live on-campus, or decide to move off-campus. If you have any questions, please check the Housing website, which has been updated with all of the renewal changes, or have your student speak to their RA.

Free Summer Housing
Free summer housing can save your student money! How? Going to summer school can help ensure your student graduates in four years or less, which saves money but your student can also save money by taking advantage of free summer housing. The housing offer is available for students who meet the following qualifications:

  • Enroll for at least six credit hours or more each summer term
  • Earn a grade point average of 2.0 or above during each summer term
  • Submit the $50 application fee
