La Esperanza Clinic VISTA Makes Big Impact in Short Service Period

Sonia’s story is a perfect example of how effective a VISTA can be for an organization. In a short amount of time she was able to inject an extra boost of energy to get some sidelined projects the attention they deserved!

After serving a short time at a community health clinic in San Angelo, Texas, Sonia Ramirez-Munoz said, “even though my time was brief at La Esperanza Clinic, working with such an amazing and welcoming organization has been one of the best experiences of my life.”

 

After only two months of service as a VISTA member with the Concho Valley Placement Project, Sonia unexpectedly received notice of acceptance to University of Southern California graduate program in Strategic Public Relations. Feeling it was an opportunity she could not pass up; Sonia cut her VISTA service short. Nevertheless, her impact spurred significant change at the clinic while she gained invaluable insight into the world of healthcare communication.

 

One of Sonia’s major assignments was to collaborate with clinic personnel on creation of a New Patient Resource Guide to detail the health and behavioral services in both English and Spanish. The Guide provides new patients the information they need to make La Esperanza Clinic their health home.


Sonia was also tasked with helping to revamp the clinic’s Facebook pages. The organization lacked a strong presence on social media, so one of her first steps was to create content that would engage the clinic’s followers. An element of Sonia’s new creations was content to highlight the HPV vaccination and awareness campaign the clinic is promoting in collaboration with the American Cancer Society.

 

 Sonia also had the opportunity to apply the advertising knowledge she had learned in college to help implement a new billboard campaign for the clinic. Working with the billboard company, she brainstormed to create ads to reflect the messages the clinic wanted to promote in the community.

 

Another opportunity that excited Sonia was her role as part of the team representing the clinic in the National Men’s Health Week Fair where helped provide men in the community a chance to get free blood sugar testing and access to a range of related information.
