Rachael Lisewsky: Building Foundation for the San Angelo Diabetes Coalition Through Research
September 06, 2017
Rachael Lisewsky started serving two months ago as a Concho Valley AmeriCorps VISTA member. Her project is to assist a newly formed San Angelo Diabetes Coalition to develop new programming to support people with diabetes in controlling progression of the disease, maintenance of good health, and reduction in risks of hospitalization for diabetes and related complications. Rachael’s goal is to improve collaboration and effectiveness of the community clinics and two regional hospitals in serving the diabetic population.
The San Angelo Diabetes Coalition is made up of the San Angelo Health Foundation, Shannon Hospital, San Angelo Community Medical Center, La Esperanza Clinics, and Angelo State University’s Community Development Initiatives. Each organization has a key role in making the coalition a success.
Rachael understands that this program is really needed for our area since the most recent research shows a high prevalence of diabetes in the Tom Green County adult population. Diabetes has a huge impact on a person’s life and on their family. Rachael wants to contribute to a program that will help people manage a very harmful disease that can lead to many other medical issues.
Her first two months on the project have been very busy and productive. Rachael has been out in the community learning about different activities and resources already available for diabetics. She has also been researching kidney disease and other diabetes related complications. Recently, she took part in submitting a grant to fund the future of the project.
Rachael is very excited to play a big part in assisting San Angelo to become a healthier community.
