Ram Powerlifters Excel at Bench Press Nationals
September 12, 2017
Three members of Angelo State University’s Ram Powerlifting Club brought home medals, including two national championships, from the U.S.A. Powerlifting 2017 Bench Press Nationals contest held Sept. 8 in Killeen.
Competing in the Junior Division against individuals aged 20-24 from across the U.S., ASU’s Brittney Barksdale of Burnet placed first in the Women’s 185-Lb Raw Division with a lift of 209 pounds, Caitlyn Buck of San Angelo took first place in the Women’s 138-Lb Equipped Division with a lift of 204 pounds, and Jerry Robertson of San Antonio placed second in the Men’s 231-Lb Raw Division with a lift of 440 pounds.
Each lifter completed three attempts each at the bench press with the heaviest lift entered for final judging. Equipped contests allow competitors to wear special clothing, including bench shirts, squat suits and knee wraps, that allow them to lift heavier weights. Raw contests are conducted without any special clothing.
ASU club sports teams are registered student organizations that are directed and funded by the Office of Student Life and overseen by the Sports Club Council. Buck is president of the Ram Powerlifting Club, and the faculty sponsor is Dr. Adam Parker, associate professor of kinesiology.
