Former GAFB Wing Commander to Speak at ASU

Angelo State University will host Brig. Gen. Scott Bethel, former commander of the 17th Training Wing at Goodfellow Air Force Base, for a special presentation on Russia on Tuesday, April 5, in the ASU Academic Building, 2502 Dena Drive.

Bethel’s presentation, “Russian Politics/Relations with Neighbors,” is part of ASU’s Russian Enrichment Program. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 004 of the Academic Building and is open free to the public. It is being sponsored by the ASU Russian Club and Department of Modern Languages.

Bethel is vice commander of the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Agency at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, with duty at Fort George G. Meade, Md. He was at Goodfellow AFB twice, first as a student in July-August 1998, and again as wing commander from August of 2005 to March of 2007.

Besides the GAFB wing, Bethel also has commanded an intelligence squadron and group. Additionally, he has served as a chief of unit-level intelligence; Air Staff action officer and long-range budget programmer; graduate-level intelligence instructor; and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s chief targeteer during Operation Allied Force bombing of Yugoslavia. He has deployed five times to combat areas, most recently as chief of intelligence collection management for the Multinational Force in Iraq. Prior to his current post, Bethel served as the director of strategy, integration and doctrine and deputy chief of staff for ISR Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
