Intramural Flag Football National Champions

Angelo State University intramural flag football team IM Legends claimed the 2017 Co-Rec Division National Championship at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) National Campus Championship Series Jan. 5-7 at the University of West Florida in Pensacola.
IM Legends defeated a team from Georgia Southern University, 29-0, in the championship game to win the title. It is the fourth NIRSA national championship for IM Legends, who also won in 2012, 2013 and 2015 – and were runners-up in 2011 and 2014.
To get to the title game, IM Legends won their pool by beating a team from Pensacola State College, 18-16, and then defeating a Louisiana Tech University team, 44-38, in double overtime. In the quarterfinals, IM Legends beat a team from Stephen F. Austin State University, 59-6, and then posted a 26-20 victory over a team from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the semifinals.
Individually for IM Legends, Jacie Klose was named Female MVP and Miguel Castillo won Male MVP for the Co-Rec Division. They were joined on the Co-Rec All-America Team by teammate Valerie Villalva. The IM Legends roster also included Jonathan Arthur, Izzy Bluso, Chase Churchwell, Lindsey Englehart, Julian Helms, Taylor Hoelscher, Stefani Richardson, Amanda Saenz, Chuck Tapia and Shannon Thompson.
Additionally for ASU, women’s team Vixen competed at the national tournament. Vixen won its pool and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual national champion team from the University of Florida, 12-0. Vixen also won the tournament’s Sportsmanship Award that goes to the team that best exemplified the qualities of competition and good sportsmanship.
In addition to their four NIRSA national titles, IM Legends also won American Collegiate Intramural Sports (ACIS) national championships in 2010 and 2012.
