Miah Wagnon: Story of a VISTA Trailblazer
February 20, 2018
Miah Wagnon was the very first VISTA placed by the Concho Valley VISTA Placement Project located in San Angelo, TX. Miah was placed with and assisted the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health. The biggest task of Miah’s VISTA assignment was to create the Dia de la Mujer [Day of the Woman] event. The event needed to be created because there simply were no other health events in San Angelo that specifically caters to its Spanish-speaking women to empower them and their families.
Miah’s project created a committee of Hispanic community leaders to advise the Institute with expanded outreach and educational events focused on healthy living, navigating the health care system, and prevention of key chronic illnesses impacting the Hispanic population. Miah secured more than 20 organizations to participate in an informational fair named “Día de la Mujer” event. One partner organization is La Unica Broadcasting which provided Spanish radio spots and promoted the event.
The informal health fair took place on September 30th 2017. 200 people attended. Dia de la Mujer hosted Health Booths, Wellness Booths and last but not least Fun Booths. The most popular part of the entire event was the appearance of Gaby Natale who is a Spanish Emmy Award Winner. The Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health hopes to either hold multiple Dia de la Mujer fairs in 2018 or one big one again.
Miah is now the part-time office manager for LWBIWH and has received her education award that VISTAs may receive at the end of their service.
