Annual Holland Symposium Student Contest Winners

Angelo State University art major Zachary Vigil-Minyard of Odessa has been awarded the top prize in the 2018 University Symposium Student Contest that is conducted each year in conjunction with ASU’s E. James Holland University Symposium on American Values.

Zachary Vigil-Minyard with his winning print "Natalia"Zachary Vigil-Minyard with his winning print "Natalia"Vigil-Minyard, who specializes in graphic design, won first place and a $300 prize for his digital print titled “Natalia.” Second place and $100 were awarded to Adriela Zavala, a graphic design major from San Angelo, for her digital print titled “Mas Amor, Por Favor.” The $75 third-place prize was awarded to Hyoseung Allyson Woo of Incheon, South Korea, for her digital print titled “More than just…” Art/ceramics major Rebekah Raschke of San Angelo earned Honorable Mention and a $25 prize for her painting titled “The New Vision.”

Second Place - "Mas Amor, Por Favor"Second Place - "Mas Amor, Por Favor"All of the 19 artworks submitted for the contest will be on display Feb. 25 – March 1 in Gallery 193 on the first floor of the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive. The gallery is open free to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

3rd Place - "More than just..."3rd Place - "More than just..."Honorable Mention - "The New Vision"Honorable Mention - "The New Vision"The 2018 symposium in September featured Sonia Manzano, best-selling author and longtime star as “Maria” on “Sesame Street,” whose presentations were themed “Latina/o Representation in the Media, Civil Rights and American Values.” Student contest entries were judged on relation to the theme, creativity, originality, depth of thought and technical competency.   

The judges for this year’s contest were Dr. Carolyn Gascoigne, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, and Chris Stewart, associate professor and chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
