New Dean Appointed for ASU College of Education
March 28, 2019
Dr. Scarlet M. Clouse, dean of the College of Education and an associate professor at University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M., has been appointed the new dean of Angelo State University’s College of Education, effective Aug. 1.
At USW since 2017, Clouse is also director of institutional effectiveness, and previously served on the Higher Learning Commission Re-Accreditation Team and as chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. Prior to joining USW, she spent 10 years at Sul Ross State University, advancing from educational diagnostician and graduate program coordinator to director of teacher education and chair of the Department of Education. She also served as coordinator of the undergraduate program, post-baccalaureate initial certification program, educational leadership graduate program, and field experiences program at SRSU.
Clouse also has extensive Texas public school teaching and coaching experience in the Schleicher County and Alpine independent school districts, and as an educational diagnostician for the Alpine ISD.
Dr. Don Topliff, ASU provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced Clouse’s appointment.
“Following a national search and on-campus interviews with three excellent candidates, the search committee recommended to me that Dr. Clouse was the best person for the job,” Topliff said. “I concurred 100 percent with that recommendation and am very excited that we were able to attract such an energetic candidate. Dr. Clouse brings with her a wealth of experience at both the high school and university levels, and will provide excellent leadership to the College of Education.”
Clouse earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and educational diagnostician certification from SRSU and her doctorate in higher education administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce. She won a Top Academic Publication Award and Top Academic Presentation Award at Texas A&M-Commerce, as well as a Top Academic Program Assessment at SRSU. She is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, Texas Council of Administrators of Special Education, Texas Educational Diagnosticians Association, and the Kappa Delta Pi international honor society for education.
As dean of the ASU College of Education, Clouse will oversee all academic programs and services in the Department of Teacher Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Educator Preparation Program and Educator Preparation Information Center. She will replace long-time dean Dr. John Miazga, who has announced his retirement this summer.
