ASU Earns National ‘Military Spouse Friendly School’ Designation
June 04, 2019
For the fourth straight year, Angelo State University has been designated a “Military Spouse Friendly® School” for 2019-20 by Victory Media (VIQTORY), which publishes several magazines and websites, including G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse, that serve military personnel and their families.
The 2019-20 Military Spouse Friendly® Schools list honors the top U.S. colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military spouses as students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success both in the classroom and after graduation. Angelo State is one of only 196 institutions recognized nationally and one of only three public universities in Texas on this year’s list.
“We understand that the spouses of military personnel are also serving our country,” said ASU President Brian J. May. “They provide the home and family support to the soldiers, sailors and airmen who ensure our national safety and security, and we take pride in honoring them by providing the academic programs and campus support services they need to get a quality ASU education. They are an important part of the Ram Family.”
To be considered for the Military Spouse Friendly® School designation, institutions must first be named a Military Friendly® School by Victory Media. Angelo State earned that designation in January for the 11th straight year and received a Top 10 Gold Award for ranking in the top 10 of the 76 institutions in the Large Public University category.
Final ratings are determined by combining each institution’s scores on the annual Military Friendly® survey with an assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence and loan default rates for all students – and specifically for student veterans and their families.
“The Military Spouse Friendly Schools designation helps military spouses select schools that will support them in their education journey by meeting their unique needs as a part of a military family,” said Brian Hucik, Military Friendly® national program manager. “Schools that are selected for the list are at the forefront of supporting the goals of military spouses.”
ASU’s programs for military and veteran students and their families are overseen by the Office of Affiliated Military and Veteran Services, which is housed in the Veterans Educational and Transitional Services (VETS) Center in the Houston Harte University Center.
The complete list of Military Spouse Friendly® Schools is available with school profiles on the Military Friendly® website and the Military Spouse magazine website. It will also be published in the September issue of Military Spouse magazine. The only other Texas public universities to make the 2019-20 list are Texas A&M University-Central Texas and the University of Texas at Arlington.
