ASU Again Designated a National ‘College of Distinction’

July 22, 2019

Angelo State University is one of only 370 schools, representing 44 states, named a 2019-20 “College of Distinction” by the Colleges of Distinction print and online college guide that recognizes colleges and universities implementing best practices in higher education.

This marks the second straight year ASU has earned the national “College of Distinction” designation, and ASU is also one of only four Texas public universities out of 16 total Texas institutions on the 2019-20 list. Additionally, ASU has been named a “Texas College of Distinction” and a “Public College of Distinction” – and has received specific recognition for its business, education and nursing programs based on accreditation, breadth of program and a track record for success.

Schools are selected for the various designations for demonstrating excellence in four key areas identified by Colleges of Distinction as the “four distinctions:”

  • Engaged students
  • Great teaching
  • Vibrant community
  • Successful outcomes

“We are so proud to see Angelo State University walking the walk,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. “Colleges of Distinction knows that a truly valuable education can’t be measured by rank or reputation. Students learn and thrive best when they embrace hands-on learning in a vibrant, welcoming community. That’s why it’s so encouraging to find Angelo State take such an innovative approach with its curriculum: its high-impact educational practices ensure that the undergraduate experience is worthwhile and unique.”

Dr. Brian J. MayDr. Brian J. MayASU President Brian J. May said, “We are particularly pleased to receive this honor because College of Distinction’s ‘four distinctions’ are the exact areas where Angelo State strives for excellence. We work hard to engage our students in the Ram Family, provide exceptional teaching and a lively campus community, and prepare our graduates for success in their careers and in life. To have our efforts earn national recognition is awesome.”

The primary goal of Colleges of Distinction is to “connect individual students to information that empowers them to make confident choices from among the best colleges in our nation.”

To that end, an in-depth profile of ASU will be published in the 2019-20 Colleges of Distinction guidebook and is already posted on the website, which provides the information to college-bound students, their parents and high school counselors without a subscription fee.
