First Generation Rams: A program to help students use their time wisely and adjust to the new college life.

First Generation Rams – Providing extra support and encouraging students to be the first in their family to graduate from college.

Coming to college is a major life event and can be overwhelming, especially for First Generation College students. Here at Angelo State University, there is a program to help! Introducing the First Gen Rams program. This program provides an extra layer of support for incoming freshmen who are First Generation College students. At ASU, we consider a student to be “first gen” if neither one of their parents/guardians graduated from a 4-year university. Making the transition from high school to college can be tough, as students will have to learn to use their time wisely and adjust to the new college life.

With the First Gen Rams program, students will meet with the program coordinator 3 times (on average about once per month) during their first semester at ASU. During these appointments, we will discuss their academic progress, any academic struggles they may be facing, discuss academic support services, etc. We can also work on time management skills, study habits, and how to effectively study for exams. All students will be required to use a planner and bring it to each appointment as well. Planners help students with time management and gives them a visual for what each day will look like.

Another component of the program is the peer mentor portion. Students have the option to have a student mentor if they want. If they choose to get a student mentor, the program coordinator will assign a mentor who can also give them advice and support from a student perspective. The student mentors are ASU students who volunteer their time and want to help a fellow ASU student.

The whole purpose of this program is to help first generation college students make a smooth transition from high school to college and help them get adjusted to life at ASU and the community. This program will also promote campus involvement and participation at events on campus to help them stay connected.
