The Services of the Small Business Development Center
November 04, 2019
Thousands of small businesses in the Concho Valley have benefited from our business advising and training services.
We believe the economic progress and health of our area could not have been accomplished without the dedication, drive, and determination of our small businesses and the people that own and manage them. We are humbled by their tenacity and willingness to take risks to make their dreams come true. We applaud their accomplishments and feel honored to serve them. They are true champions in our eyes. As many have said before, small businesses are the key to our local economy. We are here to serve and foster small business success in any way we can.
The SBDC provides two basic services for small businesses. The first service is our technical business advising which is at no-cost and confidential. It is conducted by certified business advisors who have small business ownership or business management experience. One-on-one advising is conducted in our office or onsite at the clients’ business. Advice and coaching are offered in many different areas of starting and operating a small business. Areas include business startup, business expansion, business plans and loan proposals, business financing, financial analysis, marketing of all kinds and more. For the fiscal year 2019 which ended September 30th, we advised 548 people and businesses, which includes startup entrepreneurs and those already in business.
The second service we provide is technical business training, which is conducted at no-cost to low-cost. We conduct on average 85+ seminars and workshops each year on a variety of small business topics. Some of these include Essentials of Starting a Business, The Business Plan, Finding Funding for Your Business, Marketing 101, Social Media Marketing, Legal Entities, Understanding Financial Statements and many more. The events are taught by SBDC certified business advisors or by local experts such as CPA’s, attorneys, marketing specialists, etc. In addition, we conduct intensive small business training with Online QuickBooks, Profit Mastery and the Small Business Management Certificate Program. For the fiscal year 2019, 1,108 people attended our technical business training events.
We also connect small businesses to other resources by regularly referring clients to these resource partners when appropriate: The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, the Concho Valley Workforce Development Board, Workforce Solutions, City of San Angelo Development Corporation, The Business Factory Business Incubator, Downtown San Angelo and Howard College Workforce Training. In addition, we can connect small businesses to ASU for student internships, and possible projects with students under faculty supervision.
