Updated Info for CSS Narco-Terrorism Conf.

June 26, 2012

Angelo State University’s Center for Security Studies (CSS) will co-host a three-day conference addressing narco-terrorism, drug-related violence and transnational crime Aug. 21-23 in the ASU Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive in San Angelo, Texas.

Titled “Transborder Narco-terrorism: Addressing a Changing Environment,” the conference will examine current transnational organized crime associated with the drug trade at the U.S.-Mexico border and its corrosive effect on the rule of law, which prevents governments from containing other transnational hazards, such as terrorism, insurgency, criminal gang activity, money laundering, and weapons and human trafficking.  Policy-level strategists along with field operators and tacticians will come together for dialogue, networking and information exchange on drug cartel strategies/tactics and threats to homeland security.  TCLEOSE, CLE and federal LEO education credits will be available for conference attendees.

Scheduled speakers include representatives from the Texas National Guard, Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Mexico’s Transborder International Police (PIT/TIP), Southwest U.S. Border Alliance, Texas Tech University School of Law, ASU Center for Security Studies, the Houston, New York, Tucson and Phoenix police departments, and several other agencies and institutions.

Topics to be covered include trends in narco-terrorism, transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), bulk cash smuggling, information sharing, drug-related kidnapping investigations, law enforcement collaborations, gangs and drug trafficking, prosecuting TCOs, border and homeland security, and many other related subjects.

The extreme, drug-related violence in the U.S.-Mexico border region; the threat of narco-terror and the influence of Iranian-backed violent extremist organizations in Latin America; and the proliferation of drug cartel activity fueling transnational crime in Mexico and throughout Central America make this conference topic both timely and important.  The conference will be of particular interest to members of federal, state and local law enforcement organizations and members of the legal community.

Co-hosts for the conference are the CSS, Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University School of Law and PIT/TIP.  Registration is $175 per person until July 20, and $200 after that.
