Arts at ASU Season Begins with ‘Barefoot in the Park’

June 09, 2011

Angelo State University’s Arts at ASU program will kick off its 2011-12 season with Neil Simon’s comedy Broadway and movie classic “Barefoot in the Park” beginning Thursday, June 23 in the ASU Modular Theatre.

Show times are 8 p.m. June 23-25 and June 30-July 2, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 26. For 8 p.m. shows, the doors will open at 6:45 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. For the 2 p.m. matinee, the doors will open at 12:45 p.m. with dinner served at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $12.50 for ASU students and ASU activity card holders, $15 for non-ASU students and Arts at ASU subscribers, and $20 general admission. The Modular Theatre is located in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

“Barefoot in the Park” features Paul Bratter, a no-nonsense attorney who finds life with his flighty bride, Corie, trying. The couple live in a poorly heated and leaky roofed walk-up flat in 1960s Manhattan, where their basic personality differences, an off-beat upstairs neighbor, Velasco, and Corie’s “helpful” mother combine to make a recipe for laughs.

When Corie tries to match her strait-laced mother with the flamboyant Velasco at a dinner party, Paul believes the idea is doomed to disaster. Plot twists and turns keep the audience riveted and wondering what will come next for the four characters.

Dr. Terry Lewis, professor of theatre and director of the University Theatre at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, is the guest director.

Reservations are available now for subscribers by calling 942-2000 from 2-6 p.m. weekdays. The general public can begin making reservations on Monday, June 13. All tickets must be sold in advance and paid for within 48 hours of the show. Reservations should be made approximately 10 days before the desired show, and cancellations must be made in advance.

Season subscriptions for the 2011-12 Arts at ASU season are now available for $30, which entitles holders to free admission to plays and musicals, and $15 tickets for dinner theatres. For more information on “Barefoot in the Park” and/or season subscriptions, call 325-942-2146.
