ASU Fall Science Days Announced

October 02, 2012

More than 750 local and area fourth graders will get an up-close look at some of the wonders of science during Angelo State University’s fall Science Days on Oct. 9, 11, 16 and 18 in the Cavness Science Building on the ASU campus.

Students from Glenmore and Goliad elementary schools will attend on Oct. 9; Fannin, McGill, Reagan and Reagan County elementary students will attend on Oct. 11; students from Bradford, Holiman and Santa Rita elementaries will attend on Oct. 16; and McGill, San Jacinto and Wall elementary students will attend on Oct. 18.  The Cavness Science Building is located at 2460 Dena Drive.

During Science Days, students will see specimens from the Biology Department’s Natural History Collections, showing the variety of wildlife found in the Concho Valley.  They will also learn about geology and participate in several hands-on science demonstrations and some interesting math activities.  Following lunch on the lawn, the grand finale of the program will be a chemistry and physics magic show.  The activities are conducted by ASU faculty, staff and students from the Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics and Geosciences Departments.  Students from San Angelo Central High School also provide volunteer support.

Activities will begin at 9:20 a.m. each day and culminate with the magic show starting at 12:20 p.m.

The Science Days program is intended to provide elementary students with the opportunity to experience science in an educational setting and to interest them in science at an early age.  Studies show that once students reach the upper elementary grades, it is much harder to stimulate their interest in the sciences.  Since its inception in 2006, the Science Days program has hosted more than 10,000 local and area fourth graders.

Dr. Bonnie Amos, ASU professor of biology, organizes the Science Days program during each fall and spring semester.  Area elementary schools interested in participating in future sessions of Science Days can contact Amos at 325-486-6656.
