ASU ROTC Hosts Wounded Warrior Run

December 06, 2012

Angelo State University’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 raised $2,700 for the Wounded Warrior Project through a 5K run on campus Dec. 1.

About 380 runners participated in the event.  Cadet Dylan Meador, an ASU sophomore, took the lead organizing ASU’s 5K run.  This was the first year ROTC Detachment 847 hosted an event to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

“I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of support for our run,” Meador said, “and hope to see more runners and sponsors for next year’s 5K.”

“This 5K fundraiser would not have been as successful as it was without the great support of the Road Lizards and all the local sponsors,” added Cadet Wing Commander Abraham Morland.  “Additionally, Goodfellow Air Force Base, the San Angelo community and Angelo State University all provided incredible support to ensure we had a great showing.”

Morland also contacted 144 other Air Force ROTC detachments nationwide to invite them to sponsor their own 5K runs during this academic year, and of those, 22 are planning to participate.  Next year, ASU cadets plan to extend the invitation to hundreds of Navy and Army ROTC detachments nationwide.

Lt. Col. Stephen W. Magnan, commander of ROTC Detachment 847, praised the cadets for organizing the event and reaching out to other detachments across the nation.

“With this fundraiser, the cadets are truly ‘paying it forward,’” Magnan said.  “Their enthusiasm and initiative to provide support for those who have already given so much says a lot about their character.  These cadets are future leaders of the Air Force, and they have demonstrated excellent leadership skills.”

The Wounded Warrior Project is a national organization that raises awareness and support for injured service members and develops programs to assist them.
