Stevens Presents at Women’s Studies Conference

Graduate Student Nicole Stevens presents at annual Women’s Studies Conference at Texas Tech

MA English student Nicole Stevens presented a conference paper at the 29th annual Women’s Studies Conference at Texas Tech University, April 4-5, 2013 in Lubbock, Texas.

According to Stevens,

“I was honored with the opportunity to present my paper “Inverting Gender to Demonstrate a Woman’s Power and Manipulation of the Class System,” which looks at Louisa May Alcott’s feminist work, Behind a Mask: or, A Woman’s Power.I strove to show how Alcott used her writing to rebel against the nineteenth-century sentimental novel, and how she revealed the oppression of women as well as the abilities they possess but keep safely hidden within. One of the most revealing factors to emerge during the conference is the lack of feminist exposure for younger generations because feminist awareness and gender studies are not typically introduced until the university level. The Women’s Studies Conference strives to educate all people, regardless of gender, of the oppression females still face today. The conference helps people understand that feminism is not a movement rallying for female superiority, but simply female equality.”
