The Student Warrior Outdoor Leadership Experience was a success! Pictures and details within.
The Student Warrior Outdoor Leadership Experience (SWOLE), brought to you by UREC and the VETS Center, was quite a success! The pilot program consisted of three instructors and six student veteran participants. Utilizing the beautiful Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, participants experienced: rock climbing, white-water rafting, summiting a 14,000 foot peak, and soaking in natural hot springs.
In four days, the trip provided the opportunity for student veterans to bond and develop friendships to last a lifetime. Group instructors utilized these outdoor experiences and the related symbolism to stimulate conversation. During group discussions, students outlined their highlights and challenges of transitioning from military service to student veteran status.
With the combination of the huge success of this program, and its consistency with other wilderness collegiate pre-orientation programs, UREC and the VETS Center hope to provide this opportunity on an annual basis. Furthermore, our hope is to aim this program at incoming student veterans (either at ASU, or the Direct Path Program at Howard College) each year and pair them with existing student veterans as a part of a connection process.
