ASU Named ‘Best for Vets’ College

November 11, 2013

Angelo State University has been named one of the nation’s 120 Best Colleges for Veterans by the Military Times organization in its Best for Vets: Colleges 2014 rankings.

ASU is ranked No. 39 out of 86 four-year institutions on the list, and is one of 10 schools in Texas to earn the “Best for Vets” designation.  The Military Times comprises the Air Force Times, Army Times, Marine Corps Times and Navy Times newspapers, their corresponding websites and the Military Times EDGE magazine.  Its “Best for Vets” rankings are based on a 150-question survey analysis of college and university offerings for military veterans.

“As with all of the ‘Best for Vets’ rankings, Best for Vets: Colleges  is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that make an institution a good fit for military veterans,” said Amanda Miller, editor of Military Times EDGE.

The rankings factor in service member enrollment, percentage of tuition covered by the G.I. Bill and availability of specific programs for military and veteran students.  Additional factors include student success and academic quality, retention rates, graduation rates and student-to-faculty ratio.

ASU President Brian J. May said, “We are particularly pleased with the ‘Best for Vets’ designation because it not only recognizes the hard work of our faculty and staff to provide quality programs for our veterans, but also takes into account other aspects that speak to the overall excellence of Angelo State.”

Earlier this year, ASU opened its new Veterans Educational and Transitional Services (VETS) Center in the Houston Harte University Center.  Its staff is dedicated to providing information and guidance on the enrollment, financial aid, academic, transfer, tutoring and social services available to military and veteran students and their families.

The “Best for Vets” rankings are published in the November issue of Military Times EDGE and online at MilitaryTimes.com, AirForceTimes.com, ArmyTimes.com, MarineCorpsTimes.com and NavyTimes.com.

This is the first “Best for Vets” designation for ASU following five straight years of being named a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs magazine.
