Regional Science Students Head to ASU for Annual Contest

January 28, 2010

Hundreds of West Texas junior high and high school students will display their science projects at the District XI Regional Science and Engineering Competition Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Angelo State University’s Houston Harte University Center.

More than 300 students will compete in 17 different categories, including animal science, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, physics, microbiology, health and medicine, energy and transportation, and engineering. Anyone interested in participating as a judge can find further details on the competition Web site at www.angelo.edu/org/science_competition/.

Contests will be followed by an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center, where the winners will be presented various prizes. The three top-placing seniors will win $1,500, $1,000 and $500 scholarships to ASU, respectively.

Students winning first, second and third place in each category will advance to the state competition later this spring in San Antonio. Winners of the High School Division will be eligible to attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, Calif., May 9-14.

“The quantity of students trained in applied sciences, math, technology and medical fields is well below the number needed to keep pace with the times,” said Steven Skinner, executive director of the competition. “Science competitions stimulate interests in our students and provide real-time experience.”

Other activities scheduled for the student contestants include departmental displays, shows in the ASU Planetarium and a chemistry and physics magic show along with movies and both indoor and outdoor games. This is the seventh consecutive year ASU has hosted the regional competition.

Counties in District XI include Brown, Callahan, Coke, Coleman, Comanche, Concho, Crockett, Eastland, Fisher, Haskell, Irion, Jones, Kimble, Mason, McCulloch, Menard, Mills, Nolan, Runnels, San Saba, Schleicher, Scurry, Shackelford, Stephens, Sterling, Stonewall, Sutton, Taylor, Throckmorton and Tom Green.
