ASU Photo Party to ID Images

January 02, 2014

Members of the public who enjoy mysteries will have a chance to solve some for posterity when Angelo State University’s West Texas Collection hosts a “picture party” to identify people and locations in photographs from the files of the San Angelo Standard-Times, Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Porter Henderson Library and West Texas Collection (WTC), the photos will be available for viewing 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 8 in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive, on the ASU campus.  The event is open to free to the public and provides an opportunity for area residents to help identify for the historical record key photographs from the Concho Valley’s past.

The photographs available for inspection will include those borrowed and scanned from the Standard-Times’ files as well as other photos previously donated to the WTC by the newspaper.  Most of the unidentified photos are from the 1970s and early 1980s.  The images include Concho Valley sports, agriculture, rodeo and stock show, area schools and colleges, businesses and organizations.  Other images focus on local residents, including a variety of people and children, as well as community events, fiestas and special occasions.

West Texas Collection Head Suzanne Campbell estimates more than 500 photos will be available for inspection.

“All are unidentified and we need to ID as many as possible,” Campbell said, “so we can preserve their place in history while there are still people around to identify that history.”

In addition to the historic photos for inspection, the West Texas Collection will have exhibits on display on the history of the San Angelo Standard-Times, the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, the area’s sheep and wool industry, and the history of Shannon Hospital.

The event is free to the public, and light refreshments will be served.  For additional information, contact the West Texas Collection at 942-2164.
