ASU Chemistry Group Honored

February 17, 2014

Angelo State University’s student affiliates chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has received a Commendable Award from the national ACS Committee on Education for the chapter’s activities during the 2012-13 academic year.

This marks the eighth straight year the ASU chapter has received a year-end award from the national ACS.  The ASU group and other award-winning chapters will be honored at the 247th ACS National Meeting on March 16 in Dallas.  They have already been highlighted in the November/December 2013 issue of inChemistry, the ACS student member magazine, and will be featured in a future issue of the Chemical & Engineering News weekly ACS magazine.

The ASU chapter was recognized for its participation in chemistry outreach activities, attendance at national meetings, and fundraising and social events.  Chapter members annually take part in ASU Science Days, Mole Day, Earth Day and National Chemistry Week activities, and have hosted several “Green Chemistry” events on the ASU campus.  They also conduct a campus speaker program, have regular fundraising events and frequently include local and area high school students in their activities.  Members also present their research at various organizational meetings, including the national ACS and Texas Academy of Science.

Faculty sponsors for ASU’s student chapter are Dr. Edith Osborne, assistant professor of chemistry, and Kevin Boudreaux, senior instructor of chemistry.

“Few faculty members are willing to make the great commitment of time and energy that a successful chapter requires,” said Dr. Marinda Li Wu, ACS president.  “Edith Osborne’s and Kevin Boudreaux’s efforts certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the county.  We extend out warmest congratulations to the students, Osborne and Boudreaux for setting such a fine example for other chapters and being exemplary chemistry ambassadors.”

ACS is the world’s largest scientific society.  It is a non-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress, and is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences.  Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.  More information is available online at www.acs.org.
