January 19, 2011

Winners and other participants in Angelo State University’s 2010 Holland Symposium Contest will be recognized at an awards ceremony Thursday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m. in the Art Gallery of the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

Honorees will include Alisha Bailey and Virginia Fernandez, who won first place awards, and honorable mentions, Isabella Deocariza, Jessica Robert and Levi Smith. All the student entries will be on display, and the ceremony is open free to the public.

Bailey specializes in music and won for her DVD video performance, “Preparing a Cello Suite in the 21st Century.” Fernandez, who is a graphic designer, won for her digital print, “The Fruit of Knowledge.”

Entries were judged on creativity, originality, depth of thought, technical competency and relation to the theme of ASU’s 2010 E. James Holland University Symposium on American Values, which was “The Role of Social Media in Politics and Education.” Contest judges were ASU faculty members Peggy Nino and Dr. John Irish from the Art and Music Department and Kristen Stanley from the Communication, Mass Media and Theatre Department.
