ASU to Celebrate Anniversary of Texas Declaration of Independence

February 22, 2011

Angelo State University’s History Department, West Texas Collection and Multicultural Center will mark the 175th anniversary of the Texas Declaration of Independence with a special ceremony on Wednesday, March 2, in the ASU Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

Activities will begin at 11 a.m. outside the West Texas Collection on the second floor of the University Center and are open free to the public. The featured speaker will be Dr. Arnoldo De León, ASU professor of history, whose presentation is titled “A Multicultural Revolution.” Cake and punch will also be served.

On March 2, 1836, the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico was unanimously adopted by the delegates at a convention held at Washington-on-the-Brazos, Texas, marking the date that would produce the birth of the Republic of Texas on April 21, 1836.

De León is one of the nation’s preeminent authorities on Texas and Tejano history. He is the author, co-author or co-editor of 20 books, including The History of Texas, the most-used college-level textbook on the Lone Star State’s past.
