Four Receive Staff Excellence Awards from Angelo State

February 21, 2011

Four Angelo State University employees – David Hartin, Katie Plum, Tammy Speciale and Judy Stanley – have been named recipients of the ASU Staff Excellence Awards for outstanding job performance in 2010.

Hartin is a safety specialist in the Environmental, Health, Safety and Risk Management Office. Plum serves as the director of the Office of Sponsored Projects. Speciale is a registered nurse in the University Clinic. Stanley works as a student accounts coordinator in the Office of the Bursar.

The four were selected from 28 nominees for the awards given each spring semester in recognition of exemplary job performance during the preceding calendar year. The Staff Excellence Awards recognize non-teaching staff members whose job performance exceeds the customary standards or who exhibit outstanding skill or dedication while performing special projects.

Each recipient received a certificate and a $650 honorarium during a campus wide presentation Monday (Feb. 21) in the ASU Houston Harte University Center.

Hartin became an ASU employee in 2007 and was honored for his overall excellence in the performance of his duties, particularly in the field of environmental compliance where he has helped implement the chemical inventory system for the College of Sciences. His expertise has helped reduce potential safety hazards campus-wide. His nominator lauded him for his “get-the-job-done type of personality” and for being “a good steward of ASU’s resources.” Hartin was also noted for his leadership in implementing the ASU recycling program and ensuring all collection points were picked up regularly, even when it required extra work hours on his part.

Joining the ASU staff in 2008, Plum was selected for utilizing her broad-ranging knowledge of federal and state grants to the benefit of university faculty and colleges in grant writing, solicitation and funding. She was called “an exemplary employee” by her nominator and praised for her exceptional communication skills in sharing information that can help departments secure external funding that they may not have realized even existed. Her letter of nomination noted that “she welcomes change, which is necessary to tackle the challenges in the ever changing world of grants.” As a result, she has helped elevate ASU’s success in securing external grants.”

Speciale has worked in the University Clinic since 2000. She was praised for her overall commitment to excellence, for her organizational and management skills that increase the effectiveness of clinic operations, and for her ongoing willingness to help accomplish tasks, regardless of whether or not they are on her job description. Wrote one nominator, she “is always cheerful and cares deeply about every student who is seen in the clinic.” Another nomination letter said, “She is a very giving person (who) puts others’ needs before her own.” Her five nominators agreed she was the perfect nurse to meet the needs of students visiting the University Clinic.

An ASU staff member since 1999, Stanley was recognized for her outstanding customer service and “her willingness to go above and beyond in serving each individual.” One student called her “the most pleasant person he had worked with on campus.” Her letter of nomination said, “Not only was she prompt and professional in helping the students pay their bills, but she also did so with a pleasant and cheerful attitude….She does not just on her job (but) she makes it her goal to make every individual who comes through her doors feel like the most important person she is working with at that moment. She truly exemplifies what an ASU staff member should be.”
