ASU Student Wins National Mohair Contest

February 10, 2011

Angelo State University sophomore Lucinda Vernor of Campwood won first place in the Mohair category and placed second overall in the American Sheep Industry Association’s 63rd annual national Make It With Wool (MIWW) contest.

Vernor was one of 29 national finalists in the Senior Division invited to the Make It With Wool awards banquet and style show in Reno, Nev., in late January. For winning the Mohair category, she received a $1,000 scholarship from the Mohair Council of America awarded by council president Pierce Miller of San Angelo. For placing second overall, she won a $250 savings bond, a Singer sewing machine, a hand-held fabric steamer, wool fabric and several other sewing accessories. Her winning entries were a black and purple reversible mohair jacket trimmed with lamb wool and a matching wool slacks and top outfit.

To reach the national finals, Vernor won the Texas MIWW State Contest last November in Fredericksburg. About 1,000 contestants of all ages from all over the U.S. and Canada compete in regional and state contests each year for the right to enter the national contest.

An exercise science major with a minor in psychology, Vernor plans to enter ASU’s physical therapy doctoral program upon earning her undergraduate degree.

Originally named the “Make It Yourself With Wool” contest, the MIWW began in Utah in 1947 and was adopted by the National Wool Growers Association. It became a national contest in 1961 and is currently sponsored by the American Sheep Industry Association and the American Sheep Industry Women.
