You cannot have another job, but you can be in school, taking no more than 12 hours. Most significantly, you will be able to add a year of experience with a national organization to your resume along with your VISTA experience. You will develop leadership, marketing and networking skills while supporting an organization that makes a difference in a child’s life through mentoring.
Candidates must be self-starters, love working with people, be highly organized, have good leadership skills, have strong communication skills (written and oral), be computer proficient and have transportation.
The VISTA project could include: recruiting volunteers, event planning and implementation, public relations, assisting with fund development, grant writing, working with children, and helping to build community partnerships.
Through the AmeriCorps/VISTA program, you commit to serving one year at BBBS of San Angelo, working at least 35+ hours each week.
In exchange for your volunteer service, the Corporation for National Service pays each member a living stipend, medical coverage, deferment of student loans for the year, and $5,550 towards school loans or for future schooling. For those who do not have a need for future schooling or loans, at the end of the year you would receive $1800.
