ASU Wool Judging Team Wraps Up Successful Season

March 26, 2010

Angelo State University’s Agriculture Department Wool Judging Team capped off another successful season last week by finishing third at the Houston Livestock Show Wool Judging Contest.

In a field of 58 competitors that included teams from Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Colorado State, Kansas State and New Mexico State, ASU was the top team in the Oral Reasons section of the competition and finished third overall behind winner Colorado State and runner-up Texas Tech.

Individually for ASU, Blaise Wilde and Katie Ede finished second and eighth overall, while Ede and Sharla Schmidt tied for first in Oral Reasons (defending their grading to a panel of judges).

ASU also joined national champion Colorado State as the only teams to finish in the top three at all three of the season’s major contests in Denver, San Antonio and Houston.

At the National Western Wool Judging Contest in Denver in January, ASU finished third overall behind only Colorado State and Texas A&M, finishing ahead of teams from Kansas State, New Mexico State, South Dakota State and Texas Tech.

In Denver, ASU had five of the top 20 scores in Oral Reasons and placed first as a team. Overall, Chase Lantz and Heather Harvey placed eighth and ninth for ASU.

In February, ASU posted its top finish of the season by taking second place at the San Antonio Livestock Show Wool Judging Contest, just four points behind Texas A&M. As a team, ASU posted a perfect score in the Placings and Reasons division and was the top performer in Oral Reasons.

Individually, ASU placed six team members in the top 20 overall and had four of the top 10 in Placings and Reasons. Sharla Schmidt and Chase Lantz finished third and fourth overall, respectively.

ASU team members also included Beth Forehand and Kara Hoegenauer. The team was coached by graduate students Kris Ede and Nathan Ray.
