American Lit Flash Mobs UC

September 26, 2014

On Thursday, September 25th, a group of sophomore literature students taking American literature with Dr. Julie Gates (associate professor of English) suddenly stopped stock still in their tracks in the Angelo State University Houston Harte University Center (UC) when they heard a loud voice say “Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity–so said Henry David Thoreau.”

The students then piped up individually with their own quotes from either Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, or Martin Luther King, Jr.

The FLASH MOB ended with the quote “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation”–by Henry David Thoreau.

Their purpose was to cause a bit of structured civil unrest, and to get people to stop and think. And stop and think they did–before the first loud quote was completely uttered, people stopped, looked, and then smartphones popped up everywhere.

At the end of the FLASH MOB, before the students casually strolled out of the UC, onlookers applauded–even the guys playing pool!
