ASU Schedules International Education Week Activities

Several of the week’s activities are open to the public, including the ASU International Students Association’s annual Banquet and Talent Show that kicks off the week at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13. The event will include a dinner, featuring foods from around the world, and the student talent show. While it is open free to the public, attendees are asked to bring a canned food item for a concurrent food drive. Seating is limited, so those planning to attend should make reservations by calling the CIS at 942-2083.

On Monday, Nov. 14, the Center for Security Studies will host the presentation “Arab Spring” given by Dr. Anthony Celso, associate professor of security studies, from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 201 of the Houston Harte University Center. The presentation is open free to the public.

Activities on Tuesday, Nov. 15, will begin with “El Cafecito,” or morning coffee, from 9 -11 a.m. in the Multicultural Center, which is located inside the University Center. Tuesday evening from 5:30-6:30 p.m., the Department of English and Modern Languages and the ASU Russian Club will present a Russian enrichment program titled “Environmental Degradation in Russia” in Room 125A of the Academic Building, 2502 Dena Drive. Both of these events are open free to the public.

Wednesday, Nov. 16, public activities will include the ASU French Club hosting breakfast from 7-9:30 a.m. in the Food Service Center, 2201 Vanderventer St. Cost for the breakfast is $4.35 per person. Later that morning, the Multicultural Center will host a Native American Celebration, complete with traditional food and entertainment, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the University Center lobby. The Native American Celebration is open free to the public.

Public activities on Thursday, Nov. 17, will begin with “El Cafecito” from 9-11 a.m. in the Multicultural Center. At 9:30 a.m., the College of Business, Small Business Development Center, Center for International Studies and Rodgers Capital Inc. will present the 13th annual ASU International Business Symposium in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center. ASU alumnus Chris Whatley, office director for the Council of State Governments, will address the changing challenges of the world economy. Both of these events are open free to the public.

On Friday, Nov. 18, the ASU English Language Learners’ Institute will host its Conversation Partners program from noon-1 p.m. in the East Office Annex, 1825 S. Johnson St. The public is invited to converse with ASU students learning English as a second language. Also at noon on Friday, the Center for Security Studies will host a presentation on border security by Dr. Manuel Zamora, assistant professor of border security and criminal justice, in Room 203 of the University Center. Both events are open free to the public.

Throughout the week, the Multicultural Center and Center for International Studies will be conducting a food drive to benefit the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank. Donations can be dropped off in the University Center or the East Office Annex.

ASU students will also have the opportunity to sample international cuisine Monday-Wednesday in the Food Service Center.
