World Famous Gum Tree

This mesquite tree represents one of the oddest campus traditions anywhere in the world. Legend has it that for good luck an ASU student pressed the first wad of gum onto the tree back in the 1960s. After his wish was granted, other students followed suit. Drought and wind caused the Gum Tree to topple over in June 2011, but facilities maintenance workers replanted the Gum Tree stump at its traditional location so that new generations of students can stick their gum on the tree. As a demonstration of the power of the Gum Tree, the stump has even shown signs of new growth since being replanted. Whatever you think of the tradition, you have to admit that the Gum Tree’s bark is worse than its bite.
