Our Ram Fam made it through the fall semester, but we must remain vigilent. A vaccination for COVID-19 has been released, but it will take time to get it to everyone.
Shannon Medical Center is the local hub for vaccinations. As COVID-19 vaccines become available, the San Angelo Health Department will update its website with more information regarding distribution and general information on the vaccines. You may also check with your primary health care physician to inquire how you may receive the vaccine.
This vaccine is completely different from any other vaccine currently in use. This is a mRNA vaccine. Because this vaccine may be approved under emergency use authorization status, requiring anyone to get vaccinated is not likely. The Texas Tech University System Office of General Counsel has already issued guidance on that front.
It is likely that sufficient supplies of the vaccine will not be available for everyone until mid-April to the first of June. It all depends on how many vaccines get EUA approval.
Importantly, at this point the vaccine does not change the need to wear a face covering, avoid crowds and socially distance while on campus. As we enter the spring semester, the same guidance will be in place.
We are planning for students, faculty and staff to be on campus for the Spring 2021 semester. Classes start Jan. 25. We will provide more information about coming back after the winter holidays.
