Faculty and Staff
You are in a unique position to be a positive support system for students on campus. You are on the front lines of interactions and engagement with students and are vital in shaping a healthy and safe campus community. Due to this position of influence, Counseling Services would like to provide you with support and resources to feel competent when navigating students struggling with mental health concerns.
Warning Signs
- Uncharacteristically poor work
- Difficulty completing tasks
- Excessive absences
- Repeated requests for special considerations
- Changes in personal hygiene
- Inappropriate responses or disjointed thought processes
- Intense emotions or emotional swings
- Verbal or written references to distress, suicidal or homicidal thoughts
- Difficulty getting along with others
- Extreme defensiveness
How to be supportive
- Don’t rush to judgment.
- Address your concerns in private, highlight specific observations, attempt to communicate you’re coming from a place of concern.
- Allow student time to express themselves without interruption.
- Give empathetic responses, avoid blaming or minimizing.
- Research available resources remind them of Counseling Services or ASU Crisis HelpLine.
- If necessary seek consultation with Counseling Services. It is important to note that although you can provide us with information about a student, we are unable to confirm their attendance in treatment or provide details about their therapy without a signed release of information form.
If you would like someone from the university to reach out to the concerned individual please fill out a students of concern form.
How to Refer a Student
- The best referral is always to walk a student over to Counseling Services. If that option is unavailable offer to call to schedule an appointment. If you deem the situation an emergency call campus police or the ASU Crisis HelpLine while still in their presence.
One-Time Crisis Stabilization Session
Faculty/Staff in crisis are eligible to be seen at Counseling Services for a one-time stabilization session depending on staff availability. Eligible employees can utilize the Employee Assistance Program for longer-term treatment.
Training
Counseling Services can provide customized training for your department on a variety of mental health issues. Please see Outreach for more information.

Family and Friends
College is an exciting time for both you and your student. However, it can also be a point of anxiety for both parties. You are a vital part of your student’s wellness and success. We have listed the below resources to help you support your student during their time at ASU. If you have a concern about your child please feel free to contact Counseling Services.
Recognize the possible warning signs of a struggling student:
- Hopeless social media posts
- Poor sleep
- Social withdrawal
- Dropping grades
- Loss of pleasure in their interest areas
- Self-harm
- Change in eating
- Increased frustration
- Volatile emotions
- Persistent fatigue
- Increased substance use

Students
In addition to counseling, there are a variety of services available to you as an ASU student.
ULifeLine allows ASU students access to learn about common mental health disorders among students, take mental health screenings, and helping a friend in distress. In the upper right-hand corner, type Angelo State University in “Find Your School.”
