You must also meet additional criteria to be eligible to receive an invitation to the program:
You must rank in the top third percent of your class at the end of your 7th-grade year to be invited to apply.
If selected, you will receive an acceptance letter and email. You must then maintain an academic standing in the top half of your class each year.
Program participants in good standing will be required to meet the admission standards of all students seeking admittance to Angelo State.
Program Application
Students eligible for this program will be invited to apply in August/September each year. The invitation letter will include the open and close dates for the application period.
Also, if you apply to attend ASU, you will not have to pay the application fee. (Look under High School seniors checklist, below, for more information)
Upon successfully completing the program, you will receive a special honor cord to wear at your high school graduation.
Once you complete the program and are admitted to ASU, you will have access to:

Group meetings to learn and share ideas and techniques about organization, time management, note taking, studying and test taking
Leadership skills training

Priority Registration - You will be able to register during the first registration period.
Make sure you follow these steps during high school to make the most of your ASU Up & Coming Scholars experience.
Fall
Stay in contact with your high school counselor.
If you have not taken your ACT or SAT, this should be a priority. Scores are needed for college applications.
Start applying to colleges. Most college applications open on Sept. 1 each year. You can apply to ASU as early as Aug. 1!
If you apply to ASU:
Select the fee waiver option at the end of the application and Submit.
Once you submit the application, send an email to vianey.sanchez@angelo.edu to request a fee waiver from the Up & Coming Scholars program.
Important Note: Your application must be submitted before you can request a fee waiver.
Apply for scholarships.
Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Click here.
Spring
Stay in contact with your high school counselor.
Continue applying for scholarships.
Complete the FAFSA if you have not already done so.
Register for ASU New Student Orientation (NSO).
Attend the Up & Coming Scholars High School Graduation Celebration.
Submit your final high school transcript at the end of your senior year.
Submit your meningitis shot record, TSI scores and other required documents as requested by the college you will be attending.
Utilize the perks of the program (ASU gym, library, athletic events, etc.).
Attend ASU New Student Orientation.
Stay in contact with your high school counselor.
Prepare for the ACT and/or SAT.
Take the ACT and/or SAT.
Continue to explore colleges, careers and majors.
Attend an Up & Coming Scholars event at the end of your junior year.
Utilize the perks of the program (ASU gym, library, athletic events, etc.).
Fall
Stay in contact with your high school counselor.
If you are invited to apply to the Up & Coming Scholars program, you must complete your application by the deadline AND submit the required forms in order for your application to be considered.
Upon acceptance, pick up your Up & Coming Scholars ID card. (Bring the ASU campus ID number you are issued upon acceptance into the program.)
Prepare for the ACT and/or SAT.
Take the ACT and/or SAT.
Begin to explore colleges, careers and majors.
Attend an Up & Coming Scholars event at the end of your sophomore year.
Utilize the perks of the program (ASU gym, library, athletic events, etc.).

Proactive Planning New semester, new start! Students will learn techniques on how to get organized, learn about time management and how to avoid procrastination to be successful in college.
High School Student and Parent Night High school students and parents will receive helpful information regarding the requirements for college and how to help as a parent.
Discover ASU Discover ASU invites all high school students and their guests to the Angelo State campus for a day where you can truly discover what life is like on campus. This event includes a special presentation and a guided campus tour.
Visits to High Schools and Invite New Students Visit high schools to talk about the requirements for college according to classifications. Also, invite new members to the program.

How to Deal with Anxiety and Stress Students will receive advice on how to deal with anxiety and stress using therapy dogs.
Getting Ready for Graduation Students will receive helpful information, like the difference between high school and college, and tips for surviving your first semester in college.
High School Graduation The high school students began this program during their freshman/sophomore year, so this graduation symbolizes the completion of this program. At the event, they will receive a certificate of completion of the program along with honor cords, which they will be able to wear on the high school graduation day.
