Safety planning is a process that allows an individual to develop ways to stay safe in potentially dangerous situations. This process includes planning for future crisis, identifying options and emergency contacts, and making decisions about the steps needed to increase safety. It is recommended that individuals who are deciding to end an unhealthy or dangerous relationship, consider the following items when safety planning:
Documents (i.e. Driver’s License and/or ID, Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Immigration Papers, Restraining or Protective Orders, Passports, etc.)
Frequently Used Items (i.e. Clothes, Medication, Money or Credit/Debit Cards, OneCard, Keys, Laptop or other devices, etc.)
Deactivate any location services on all devices and social media accounts (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Dating Apps, etc.)
Identify at least one person or entity may be called if you need immediate assistance
Determine the safest destination to navigate to. This destination could be with family, friends, or a domestic violence shelter.
Determine the mode of transportation to the destination identified above
