Participation
- The competition is for Spanish students only.
- Any student enrolled in grades 7 to 12 can participate, including those who have tested out of Spanish.
- Individual students of any level can participate, and there is no limit to the number of students who can register from each school. There will no longer be team events.

Students register and participate according to four levels:
- First-year
- Second-year
- Third- and Fourth-year
- Native speaker - Native Spanish speakers enrolled in any class, regardless of level, should participate as native speakers. Judges may reassign participants to the native speaker category if they feel that their level is beyond Spanish I, II, or III.
Registration and Dates
- Registration closes at 5 p.m. on Feb. 16.
- The competition is virtual and will run on Blackboard, the LMS used at Angelo State. Participants will be assigned temporary access and will be given two weeks (10 school days) to complete all events.
- The competition will run from March 18 to 29.
- Teachers and counselors should proctor participants. Events will open each school day at 8 a.m. and close at 4:30 p.m. It is expected that participants complete events at school.
- There is NO CHARGE for this competition.
Events
All participants must complete all 4 events:
- Reading: participants will read a variety of passages and answer between 10 to 15 multiple-choice questions.
- Listening: participants will listen to short audio recordings and answer between 10 to 15 multiple-choice questions.
- Writing: participants will be given writing tasks (for example, describe, narrate, or offer suggestions) and will be given a time limit to formulate a written response. Writing will be graded according to a rubric.
- Speaking: participants will be given speaking tasks, some related to pictures, and will be given a time limit to record a video response. Speech will be graded according to a rubric.
Results
- We hope to announce results by mid-April, though this may take longer depending on the number of participants.
- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each level will receive a medal.
- Participants and winners are encouraged to apply for the Tony Dutton Foreign Language Competition Scholarship.
