Department of Security Studies and Criminal Justice
Security studies and criminal justice are incredibly diverse fields of study that will prepare you for a wide variety of career options.
Our varied and flexible degree programs allow you to concentrate on your specific interests. Plus, you will gain the communication, critical thinking, leadership and decision-making skills that will set you apart.
Our department is the academic arm of ASU’s Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for Security Studies (CSS).
Degrees
Bachelor of Security Studies (B.S.S.) in Border and Homeland Security This degree covers terrorism and counter-terrorism, federal immigration laws, international drug and human trafficking, and chemical, biological and radiological hazards and responses. You can complete this degree on campus or online.
Bachelor of Border Security (B.B.S.) (AU-ABC) This degree is similar to the B.B.S., but is reserved for students in the AU-ABC program who already have an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force. You can complete this degree on campus or online.
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Criminal Justice This degree will prepare you for a variety of careers, including law enforcement, homeland security and crime analyzing. It is also great preparation for law school. This option requires foreign language study and fewer courses in the sciences. You can complete this degree on campus or in a hybrid on campus/online format.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Criminal Justice This degree is similar to the B.A., but includes additional courses in the sciences and does not require foreign language study. You can complete this degree on campus or in a hybrid on campus/online format.
B.S.S. in Intelligence and Analysis This degree covers the relationships between intelligence, policy making, military operations and national security. It will prepare you to accomplish the missions of the U.S. intelligence community and national security enterprises. You can complete this degree on campus or online.
Bachelor of Intelligence and Analysis (B.I.A.) This degree is similar to the B.S.S., but is reserved for active-duty members of the U.S. Air Force. You can complete this degree on campus or online.
Master of Science (M.S.) in Criminal Justice This online degree will prepare you to start or advance your career in federal, state and local agencies of the criminal justice system. It is open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree.
M.S. in Global Security Studies This online degree addresses national security issues and today’s complex international environment. It will prepare you to start or advance your career in the military, intelligence, nonprofit agencies, think tanks, and government and non-government agencies.
M.S. in Homeland Security This online degree addresses the growing needs of homeland security and law enforcement personnel, who face an ever-changing world of transnational crime and terrorism.
Master of Security Studies (M.S.S.) in Intelligence and Analysis This online degree will enhance your cognitive, analytical, decision-making, advising and leadership skills within the intelligence profession. It will prepare you to start or advance your career in the U.S. intelligence community or national security enterprises.
A student currently enrolled in good standing in one of the department’s graduate degrees may apply to pursue a second master’s upon successful completion of the initial degree. A maximum of 12 credit hours may be transferred from the initial degree to the second degree. A recommendation by the program coordinator for the second degree and approval of the department chair is required prior to applying for the new degree.
Cybercrime Investigation Certificate
Gain insight into cybercrime while you learn digital, mobile and network forensic investigative techniques. Acquire the knowledge and skills to work in cybercrime investigations for law enforcement agencies, corporations and consulting firms.
Emergency Management Certificate
Learn to organize and manage the responsibilities for dealing with various hazards, disasters and other emergencies, including preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery. Gain the knowledge and skills to work in emergency management for corporations, government agencies, healthcare systems and more.
Cybersecurity Certificate
Learn to protect computer systems and networks from digital attacks aimed at accessing, changing or destroying sensitive information, extortion or interrupting normal business processes. Gain the knowledge and skills needed to provide information security for computer companies, government agencies, financial institutions and just about any type of business or corporation.

Certificate Programs
You can earn various undergraduate and graduate certificates for added professional credentials. Certificates are available in Cybercrime Investigation, Cybersecurity and Emergency Management.
