Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary and Middle School Classroom

Candidates locate free online resources to support several areas of the social studies TEKS. Candidates also select from a variety of key social studies and must locate a Virtual Field Trip that teaches about the topic. Candidates use Padlet and Google Docs to research an assigned famous American and condense key information on Padlet or Google Docs.

Candidates are taught to include technology as part of lesson planning.

The Elementary School: Organization and Management

Candidates are taught about and have opportunities to use some of the apps that are used in the local school district. Candidates specifically use Flipgrid to create the final reflection for the course. Additional integration is planned for upcoming semesters.

Candidates choose one lesson in which they have integrated technology and analyze that particular program’s/device’s strengths and weaknesses in their content areas.

Reading Development in the Elementary School

The technology specialists from the local school district are invited to class to share with candidates how to teach Language Arts TEKS with educational apps. They are planning to incorporate this into upcoming lesson planning.

Teaching Reading in Middle Grades

Experts in technology present current free apps to support reading and writing within the middle school classrooms. Candidates then write lesson plans including a technology component. Google Slides is also used,

Candidates are taught about technology which can be used with individuals with special needs. Certain technologies fall under the purview of the SLP who will be the ones to teach the teachers how to use them.
