Chemistry and Biochemistry
This site is intended for prospective students, current students, and others interested in chemistry activities at Angelo State University, a member of the Texas Tech University System. Here you will find links to information about our academic programs, course offerings, faculty, facilities, research activities and other chemistry-related information.
Chemistry and biochemistry have an impact on everything from the clothes you wear to the foods you eat and the medicines that keep you healthy. Students in our department develop skills in analytical and critical thinking, as well as gain practical experience in research, chemical literature, instrumentation, oral presentations and scientific writing. These dynamic educational opportunities prepare our students to be competitive for positions in graduate school programs, medical/dental schools, industrial employment, and teaching opportunities.
The Chemistry faculty at Angelo State University has a strong commitment to student-oriented hands-on education. With smaller class sizes (largest classes enroll about 60 students) and personal attention to each student, we deliver the individualized instruction that allows each student to gain the maximum benefit possible from their educational experience. Research opportunities provide students with one-on-one interactions and mentorship from members of the faculty on novel chemical projects.
Faculty members in our department are passionate about providing undergraduate students with a wide variety of one-on-one faculty-mentored research projects. Areas of interest vary from trace environmental analysis to amino acid metabolism in organisms, the synthesis of possible estrogen derivatives, and the energetic and thermodynamic stability of fullerene derivatives via computational chemistry.
Research endeavors are supported primarily by the Robert A. Welch Foundation Departmental Grant, along with internal (Faculty Research Enhancement Program (FREP) and ASU Undergraduate Faculty-Mentored Grants) and external (NIH, NSF, etc.) grants.
