Pearl of the Concho
Writing Project Summer Institute

If you are looking for creative, innovative ideas to teach writing in your classroom and for opportunities to develop your own writing, consider making the Pearl of the Concho Writing Project Summer Writing Institute a part of your professional growth.

Upon completing the institute, you will have the opportunity to be a teacher consultant and may be hired to do in-service workshops for schools in the Concho Valley area. Tuition and fees for the institute are paid by grant funding from the National Writing Project, which is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Education.

Schedule and Credit

The 2011 Pearl of the Concho Writing Project Summer Writing Institute will be conducted July 5-28. Participants will meet Monday – Thursday (8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) at Angelo State University.

Classroom teachers selected to participate in the Summer Writing Institute receive six hours of graduate credit from Angelo State University.

Criteria for Selection

The Summer Writing Institute is designed for outstanding teachers from all disciplines and at all levels of instruction, from kindergarten through university.

Attendance at the Summer Writing Institute is by invitation and is limited to 20 participants. Those selected will demonstrate:

  • Successful classroom teaching
  • Commitment to using writing in the classroom
  • Desire and ability to teach other teachers
  • Openness to new ideas and approaches to teaching
  • Willingness to write

Demonstrations

During the institute, each participant will present a demonstration of an approach to teaching writing that has proven successful in the classroom. An applicant should have in mind some proven classroom activities that could be developed into a demonstration for participants in the Summer Writing Institute.

After the Institute

School-year staff development programs are offered through the Pearl of the Concho Writing Project. For a modest fee, school districts can schedule workshops that model successful approaches to teaching writing. Teachers who have participated in the Summer Writing Institute make these presentations at local schools.

Follow-up meetings are conducted several times a year to bring institute participants together for continued professional development and to plan writing project programs and activities.

Funding

The Pearl of the Concho Writing Project is supported by Angelo State University’s College of Education and the National Writing Project.
