Engineering Fundamentals
Do you enjoy solving complex mechanical problems by creating innovative solutions? Or perhaps do you dream of fixing the numerous problems with our nation’s infrastructure by building more efficient systems? If so, engineering could be the major for you!
Engineering is the application of math and physics in order to solve real-world problems. Students with an interest in earning a bachelor of science in civil engineering (BSCE) or a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering (BSME). degree must meet ASU’s admission standards as outlined in the University Catalog.
Our 4-year degree plans have students beginning with Calculus I. The Engineering Fundamentals program requires students to meet the following additional prerequisites before enrolling in Calculus I (MATH 2413):
- Earn a C or better in college level math courses including: College Algebra, Trigonometry and Precalculus through dual credit; OR
- Place into Calculus I through our campus math placement exam; OR
- Earn credit for Calculus I through the AP Calculus AB exam with a score of 3 or higher.
Incoming first-year students enrolled in MATH 1316 Trigonometry or MATH 2312 Precalculus (or higher) begin the program as Engineering Fundamentals students. Most of the courses taken during this period are needed for both degree plans, so students have the chance to explore the majors and determine their dream career path. Students remain Engineering Fundamentals majors until they successfully complete the Engineering Advancement Exam, maintain an overall GPA of 2.50, and complete the following courses:

- Mathematics 2413* - Calculus I
- Mathematics 2414* - Calculus II
- Physics 2325/2125* - Fundamentals of Physics I
- Physics 2326/2126* - Fundamentals of Physics II
Mechanical Engineering
- Engineering 1201 - Introduction to Engineering
- Engineering 1304 - Engineering Graphics
- Engineering 2301* - Engineering Mechanics - Statics
- Engineering 2302* - Engineering Mechanics - Dynamics
- Engineering 2305 - Electrical Circuits

Courses noted with an asterisk must be completed with a grade of C or better. Students will schedule an appointment with the Engineering Academic Advisor to confirm their eligibility to sit for the next scheduled Engineering Advancement Exam.
After satisfying all the criteria listed above, students progress to Civil or Mechanical Engineering majors and will complete all remaining requirements to earn a BSCE or a BSME degree as outlined in the University Catalog.
