Assistantships Overview and Application Instructions
Types of Assistantships
Graduate Assistant: With this type of assistantship you will tutor students in the ASU Writing Center 17.5 hours per week during academic semesters.
You can begin this assistantship in your first semester as a graduate student, so you can apply for it when you initially seek admittance to the program.
Teaching Assistant: With this type of assistantship you will teach two sections of ENG 1301: English Composition per semester.
You can only begin this assistantship after completing your first 18 hours as a graduate student, so wait to apply for it until spring semester of your first year as a graduate student in the program.
Assistantship Qualifications
Graduate Assistant
- Regular admission to the M.A. program
- B.A. degree including 24 hours of English, with 12 of those in advanced courses with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
Teaching Assistant
- Admission to the M.A. program
- Completion of 18 hours of graduate coursework
- Completion of English 6376: Teaching College Composition, which all graduate and teaching assistants are required to take
- B.A. degree including 24 hours of English, with 12 of those in advanced courses with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
Application Instructions
- Fill out and print an assistantship application form.
- Write a cover letter addressed to Dr. Laurence Musgrove that indicates your interest and reasons for applying to be a graduate assistant.
- Ask three people who are familiar with your work and record to send letters of reference to Dr. Laurence Musgrove at the address below.

Deadlines
Application materials should be received in the English and Modern Languages Department Office by the first Friday in April prior to the fall semester you plan to begin your assistantship.
Note:If you plan to apply for a paid assistantship, you’ll want to simultaneously apply for both admittance to the program and the assistantship by the first Friday in April prior to the Fall semester you plan to begin the program.
Renewals
Renewals are subject to approval each year. Application for renewal of a graduate assistantship will be made by sending a letter of intent to the chair of the English and Modern Languages Department by the first Friday in April.
