Up & Coming Scholars Program

The Up & Coming Scholars Program allows worthy high school students of good academic ability the chance to plan, prepare for and pursue a college degree. View PDF copy of Up & Coming Scholars Brochure HERE.

  • Criteria
    • San Angelo area students from these schools are invited to participate:

      • Lake View
      • Central
      • Cornerstone Christian
      • Texas Leadership Charter Academy
      • Ambleside
    • Students must rank in the top one-third of their class at the end of their freshman (ninth grade) year and are invited to apply for the Up & Coming Scholars Program based on their academic progress.
    • Once selected, students must then maintain an academic standing in the top half of their class each year. 
    • Program participants in good standing will be required to meet the admission standards of all students seeking admittance to Angelo State University.
  • Benefits

    A special identification card that grants access to:

    • Fitness facilities in the Ben Kelly Center for Human Performance
    • The Porter Henderson Library and its technology resources
    • Designated campus computer labs
    • ASU home intercollegiate athletic events (free of charge)
  • Checklist
    • High School Seniors

      Fall

      • If you have not taken your ACT or SAT, this should be a priority. Scores are needed for college applications.
      • Start applying to colleges. Most College applications open September 1st. You can apply to ASU as early as August 1st! 
      • If you apply to ASU, select the fee waiver option at the end of the application and Submit. Once you submit the application, send an e-mail to hzapata@angelo.edu to request a fee waiver from the Up & Coming Scholars program. View the steps here as well! 
      • Apply for Scholarships
      • Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Click here

      Spring

      • Continue applying for scholarships
      • Complete the FAFSA if you have not already done so
      • Register for New Student Orientation (NSO). Contact Haley to register in order to get the fee waived. (We cannot issue refunds if you pay the fee yourself). 
      • Attend Up & Coming Scholars High School Graduation Celebration
      • Submit final high school transcript at the end of senior year
      • Submit meningitis shot record, TSI scores, and other required documents as requested by the college you will be attending
      • Utilize the perks of the program (gym, library, NCAA events, etc.)
      • Attend New Student Orientation
    • High School Juniors
      • Prepare for the ACT or SAT
      • Take the ACT or SAT (or both)
      • Continue to explore colleges, careers, and majors
      • Attend Up & Coming Scholars event at the end of your junior year
      • Utilize the perks of the program (gym, library, NCAA events, etc.)
    • High School Sophomores

      Fall

      • Attend Up & Coming Scholars Info Session in the fall (invitation required)
      • Upon acceptance, go get UCS ID card (must take the campus ID number you are issued upon acceptance into the program)
      • Prepare for the ACT or SAT
      • Take the ACT or SAT
      • Begin to explore colleges, careers, and majors
      • Attend Up & Coming Scholars event at the end of your sophomore year
      • Utilize the perks of the program (gym, library, NCAA events, etc.)
