  • Community Engagement

    Community Engagement Initiatives

The ASU Honors Program partners with a number of community groups to provide distinctive opportunities for leadership development, service learning, and cultural awareness. Students are encouraged to engage with the community, develop life-long habits of volunteerism, and prepare for civic leadership roles.

Community Board Initiative: This innovative program places select Honors Program students on the boards of directors of various nonprofit and government agencies in San Angelo. Students learn firsthand the challenges and rewards of board service, how to develop networking skills, and how to better connect to the San Angelo community. Students have the opportunity to contribute new ideas or special technical expertise, assist in finding energetic volunteers for their board’s activities, or even establish support organizations on campus.

SAT Prep Course: Honors Students work with area high schools students from ASU’s Up and Coming Scholar program to prepare them for the SAT.  Students are given individualized tutoring in math, critical reading and writing.  At the end of the month long tutoring sessions, students are able to take a mock exam that will prepare the for the real exam.  The SAT Prep Course was originated by a student in the Honors Program.

    Easter Bunny Photo Booth

Honors Student Association Service Projects: The Honors Student Association provides volunteers for multiple community organizations ranging from children’s services and elder care to literacy.

Honors Student Association Annual Easter Egg Hunt: The students organize and conduct an annual Easter Egg Hunt for local children, complete with games, face painting, and cotton candy. Held on the Saturday before Easter, children hunt for thousands of Easter Eggs on four fields: toddlers, young kids, big kids, and allergy friendly.

Little Free Library: Honors Students have built and maintained two Little Free Library structures to serve the San Angelo Community.  Located at Kid’s Kingdom Park and Unidad Park, these small libraries are designed to inspire a love of reading, build community, and spark creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges.

Baptist Retirement Buddies: Students are partnered with local Baptist Retirement Community residents.  Students and residents spend quality time with each other, fostering intergenerational relationships.

  • Alumni Mentoring

    Alumni Mentoring Initiative
